WHO WE ARE

We are the Uniting Church

The Uniting Church SA seeks to be an innovative, growing church proclaiming Jesus Christ, empowered by the Spirit to transform God’s world. Read More.

The Uniting Church is a young church – formed on 22 June 1977, when the Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches united to become one. The Basis of Union is the document which affirms our Christian faith and is the guide to what is central to the life of the Uniting Church in Australia.

GENERATE PRESBYTERY

Unity Hill is part of the Generate Presbytery.

Generate Presbytery is a Non-Geographical Presbytery spanning the breadth of the South Australian Synod.

Together we are comprised of around 115 congregations and ministry agents. Our heartbeat is to see people come to faith in Jesus Christ, grow in their discipleship, new leaders raised up and empowered and congregations planted and renewed.

HISTORY

The Uniting Church in Port Lincoln has a rich heritage in Methodism, with early Wesleyan mission work in Port Lincoln going back further than 1867, when the first Methodist Church was built on Mortlock Terrace.

From this base, preaching places were set up throughout lower Eyre Peninsula.

As the Port Lincoln congregation grew, a grander building was erected in 1908 on the adjacent site at the corner of Liverpool Street.

To meet the needs of an expanding population in the early 1950s, Methodists and Presbyterians established worship centres at Lincoln South (now Lincoln Gardens).

The two congregations merged in 1967, becoming Lincoln Park.

While the Lincoln Park and Lincoln Central buildings served us well over many years, they were no longer suitable as our church community continued to grow.

The way forward proved to be a completely new building on a new site, and Unity Hill Uniting Church on New West Road opened in 2004.

We give thanks for the faithfulness of those pioneers who believed a church in Port Lincoln was important.

It has given us – the people of Port Lincoln – a firm foundation.

WORLD MISSION

Unity Hill is part of a much bigger mission that God is putting into action.

We believe it’s our responsibility and joy to support, encourage, pray for and be aware of the grander work of God beyond our postcode.

We make it a priority to support mission work in other countries. We love groups and individuals that both share the love of Jesus in practical help and invitations to believe in Jesus as their ultimate Saviour.

Currently this includes a significant partnership with Mwandi OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) in Zambia (click on Facebook icon below for more information about this project) and missionaries working elsewhere in Africa and the Middle-East.

Once every month we highlight in worship God’s work elsewhere with an invitation to give and pray.
